Breast Augmentation: Patient 309

Breast Implant Illness or BII is a term used to describe a wide range of symptoms in patients after breast augmentation with various systemic symptoms such as fatigue, weight loss, anxiety, muscle and joint pain, hair loss which patients attribute to their implants.  The problem is that there is no medical test to diagnose BII nor is there any predictive test as to who will develop it.  Since the symptoms are vague many patients will believe that they have BII simply because they have symptoms and implants even though the two may or may not be related.  After frustration with lack of diagnosis despite extensive testing many ladies decide to have their implants removed.  Some surgeons recommend extensive capsule removal around their implants and research shows that these extensive tissue removals do little to improve the results.  While there are patients who have symptom relief after removal and thus I do believe that implants can cause BII in some patients there are many patients that have no relief of symptoms after implant removal.  This patient came to see me upset with the appearance of her breasts.  I so appreciate her allowing me to share her photos because it is important that patients understand what capsulectomies especially en bloc capsulectomies can leave you looking like.  This patient was concerned with lack of volume as well indentations from overresection.  This is a quite common scenario that I see in my practice as women are often shocked by their appearance after capsulectomies and implant removals and that when their symptoms don't get better they reconsider getting revision breast augmentation.   Of course some women feel better after implant removal but not all and so I wish we had a proper test for BII but we simply do not in the year 2025.   She is shown here before and after revision breast augmentation with Motiva Demi 245cc breast implants.  She is delighted with her restored breast shape and volume.  (**tattoos digitally removed for privacy)
